Carole Bailey PSA Chairperson | Although I’ve always had cameras, I just took snapshots. Then around the beginning of the 21st century, I found myself closing in on retirement. I knew I had to keep myself busy, but all of my hobbies were indoor, crafty-type hobbies. I discovered that camera clubs existed in a community brochure, so I thought I’d try it. Belong to a camera club is a wonderful experience. There are lots of things to learn and lots of other photographers to learn from. And best of all, there are lots of great places to go with other club members to take wonderful pictures. Now that I am about 10 years into my ‘new’ hobby, I believe it was one of the best ‘retirement’ decisions that I made. I have been to see (and photograph) many wonderful places I probably wouldn’t have been to had it not been for photography |

My photography began in 1970 when I purchased my first SLR - a KOWA kit including a body and two screw-on lens. Within three months I upgraded to a Canon FTQL, three lens, filters, hot-shoe flash, 1.4X and 2.0X converters and a light meter. All of that served me well thru the child rearing years and into retirement. Then, after experiencing the film development costs of a growing photo collection of grandchildren and vacation memories ( Alaska, England, Iceland, Ireland, Mexico, Sweden, Western Canada, Yellowstone), I joined the digital age. I purchased a Canon digital Rebel kit and haven't looked back. But, not being anything close to a geek, I've struggled to learn only a few of the the many features within Photoshop Elements (actually, mine is only a half-hearted effort...for me, the fun is really in taking the shots not massaging them). And, since my attention span is rather short, I have no favorites but rather enjoy shooting all types of subjects. What I find makes it all worth the time and effort is that I enjoy looking (thru tri-focals) at the images I've taken ...I hope its the same for you. |

When I decided on a hobby I thought about photography. Borrowed a camera and took a technical class. Enjoyed it and got encouraged to join a camera club. George Fenske (Our first leader and originator of the club) took me under his wing and helped me along with photographing nature. I like being outdoors and being able to show other people what I see out there. Favorites are swans and flowers. In the 20 years of belonging to WNCCC, I have held the offices of treasurer, vice president, competition committeee chairperson, and president for 7 years. So it is not just the photography I am enjoying but the people that come with it. It is so much more rewarding when you do your part to help the club grow and learning new techniques along the way are the icing on the cake. |

I have had a passion for photography since I was in grade school. Being that there were no avenues for me at that time to learn about it, I managed to save enough money to buy that "BROWNIE" camera and did pretty well with it. It was hit and miss for many years using the brownie and sometimes played with the Polaroid. Since then the technology has grown rapidly. First I purchased the 35mm, which was completely manual, to the 35mm electronic with the wide variety of films to use to today's newest "DIGITAL" and all of its wonderful functions. Along with the digital age are the computer capabilities to enhance change, correct, etc. personal photos. Although I have not gotten into great detail with the newest technology, I have begun to use and understand more about it. I have purchased the Fui Fine Pix F10 and the Canon 20D. Along with these fine cameras there was the Adobe Photoshop software to consider and make use of. I also have the computer capabilities with the Adobe Photoshop software along with Photoimpression and a program for creating Greeting Cards which was included with the purchase of my computer. There is still yet a lot to learn and discover in taking photos and using the computer tools. My photo shooting includes almost everything possible; animals (especial my dog, Noah), backyard flowers, church rituals, school ball games, parades and of course the beauty of nature and scernery when on vacation. Having photography as a hobby is a challenge, it can be exciting at times and I will never get bored with it. I just wonder what will be next in the world of photography. |

The earliest camera I can remember using was my Dad’s Kodak Brownie box camera. My first serious camera was a Pentax ME Super 35mm SLR with a 50mm f1.7 lens. Many years later hat camera was succeeded by a Nikon and today I still shoot Nikon, only with a digital SLR. My favorite local places to shoot are: the Milwaukee County Zoo, the Domes, the Wehr Nature Center, Whitnall Park, the lakefront and downtown Milwaukee.

My adventure in photography began over 50 years ago with a small plastic toy like camera. Over the duration of my lifelong interest in photography I progressed through a number of pieces of photographic equipment, 35mm rangefinder, 1 1/4 twin lens reflex, conventional 35mm SLR to autofocus 35mm and recently to digital SLR. It's been a wondrous experience being part of the evolvement of photography and the gear to what it is today. What a joy to successfully create those special images worthy of others to see and enjoy.
As for favorite subjects, that also has evolved thoughtfully over the years. From humble beginnings where family and friends were the only focus of my images to sports action and eventually to nature and landscape which today still represent the main thrust of my interest in picture taking. For me, nature represents an escape from the fast moving humdrum of city life, a way to relax and be creative. In recent years I have had the fortunate experience to photograph a number of the National Parks including Arches and Canyonlands, the Everglades and Yosemite. Today I have come full circle and find that family and friends have returned to prominence for my photographic enjoyment. In reality, today I appreciate photographing a variety of subjects, which broaden my photographic skills. |

My joy in photography started over 40 years ago. Slide film from the start was my media of choice. Slides and prints made from slides became my way of entering camera club and WACCO competitions. After many awards, ribbons, etc., the digital world of photography further opened up further joys of photography for me. Landscapes and macro photography again reminded me that our God was the real creator of all of these images. I have photographed these National Parks: Acadia, Badlands, Bryce Canyon, Death Valley, Devil's Tower, Everglades, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Great Sand Dunes, Great Smoky Mts., Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion. All gifts from our God the creator. This really is the joy! |

With the exception of a few years in Arizona….the Milwaukee area has been home. Being in the Travel Industry, forever, and opening my own agency (Travel Visions - 46th & Forest Home in Milwaukee www.travelvisions.biz) in the mid 80’s has afforded me opportunities to travel the world and not only shoot the world but to meet incredibly interesting people, many becoming long time friends. I use Nikon equipment….and have become part of the digital generation. Occasionally I do pull out my F100 to shoot slides. Photo subjects of interest to me are Wildlife, Nature, Sports & Special Events, which includes traveling abroad with K C Williams (country music entertainer/song writer) and his band … www.KCWilliams.com
I also organize special photo tours to Alaska to shoot the Brown Bears of Katmai and the Black Bear at Anan Bay and my favorite…to Churchill MB for the Ice Bears of the Arctic www.PolarBearAdventures.com |

Many years ago, my father taught me to use a 120 camera, to develop black and white films and prints. I even made myself equipment to enlarge photos. All these years, I used point and shoot film cameras to take snapshots. Only when I got my first digital camera - Olympus C3300 in 2001, I started to try different lights, exposures and compositions. Two years ago, I got a deal and bought a Sony a100 kit. It was then I realized that I have so much to learn. Then one friend of mine introduced me to WNCCC. My experience so far demonstrates how beneficial to me - the members are very friendly and eager to share with others. It's no doubt that such environment will make everyone better.

I made my first print 50 years ago in a friends basement. I was hooked and took thousands of pictures off and on over for those years. I switched to digital in 2000 and love the expanded opportunities to deliver the print as I saw it through the lens. I have packed up the Canon film cameras in favor of Nikon digital equipment. I hope you enjoy my photos as much as I enjoy making them.

Photography has been one of my interests since grade school. I started with 120 film and the uncertainties of plastic cameras and flash bulbs. Once in college I started using the darkroom in the cellar of my dormitory. This was a huge milestone for me. My understanding of cameras, film and printing skyrocketed. In my first job after college I took product photos with an 8 x 10 Deardorf and did page layouts. I bought a Nikon FTN while in the Army and read many books on photography. I also shared a studio with an artist and learned much more about art and composition. But my biggest milestone came when I learned to step beyond looking at things and started seeing them. While raising my family, I just didn’t find the time for photography. Now that my children are grown I have rediscovered ‘seeing’ with a camera. Now it’s all about digital. I like the results with digital cameras, but it took a long time to get comfortable with the technology and Photoshop. The struggle was worth it though. The things we can do with this technology seem like miracles. I like to enter exhibitions and display in galleries, but I don’t expect to make money with this wonderful hobby. I want it to be fun.

After years of teaching French and English as Second Language in Milwaukee and overseas, I enjoy retirement. I like travel and photography, especially in the Southwest, macro and landscapes. I would encourage photographers to enhance their skills through sharing of knowledge and cameraderie of the camera club, as well as through workshops. Above all, take the camera, have fun and enjoy yourself.

John E. Rozanski | Before joining WNCCC, I was a member of "Schlitz Audubon Camera Club" , wife "Joan" and I were the refreshment committee for a couple of years. They held weekday evening meetings which were convenient while employed. Some of the present WNCCC members were also SACC at that time. I started photography (?) in my teens, helping an Uncle shoot weddings, using an Agfa 120 rollfilm camera with a Heiland flash unit. Then in High School got on the school paper, and remember getting on of my pictures published, of the basketball team under the hoop, also started working part time at a camera store, " The Dark Room" on Milwaukee Street. While there purchased my first 35mm, an Exakta model II. Since then have imaged family events, celebrations that other people wanted recorded, volunteering to photograph people and events as public organizational events. Have used Canon film cameras. December 2005 purchased a Minolta/Konica digital camera I am learning to use. But still have some film to use up. |

My journey in photography started in 8th grade physics class when I was learning about lens, mirror and prism. It was the first time I saw a single lens reflex (SLR) camera. I was intrigued by the unique combination of lens, mirror and prism in a SLR camera. Since then my interest in photography started to grow, but I had no definite direction in photography as far as creative photography was concerned. In college, my vision about the photography completely changed when I first saw the photographs of Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, Edward Weston and David Muench. Around the same time my uncle gave me a SLR camera (Nikkormat FTN), which became my constant companion for many years. Photography is my passion and through it I enjoy the nature, people and countries. I think that the photography is not just capturing images, but it also to know about things around me and appreciate it. Whenever time permits I go out with my friends to take pictures and it is most enjoyable to me. I am a self taught photographer and I shoot both film and digital. |
